One of the most common questions we understandably get about air conditioning systems is how homeowners can use them most efficiently, in order to lower their energy costs. Considering how uncomfortably warm in gets in our climate, and how long it lasts, it’s only natural that you might wonder this as well.

We have good news! There are a number of actions you can take to lower your bills, including scheduling routine maintenance. Spending a little money now on tuning your air conditioner up each year can actually save you even more in the long run throughout the year. There are also various HVAC and indoor air quality products that can help, such as a dehumidifier that will allow the air to feel cooler so you can turn your thermostat up a couple of degrees and your AC won’t have to run as long.

Is your AC ready for summer? This is a question homeowners all over the country should be asking themselves, but it’s even more important here, where “summer” can last 9 months or longer, pretty much.

Of course, when we ask if your AC system is ready for summer, what we’re really asking is if you’ve scheduled maintenance for it yet. We talked about this a bit in our last post—how maintenance will help your system work more effectively, and efficiently. Maintenance, though, is not the only way to get your air conditioner to work as efficiently as possible. In fact, there are some things you can do in addition to your tune-up that cost no money at all!

It’s that time of year again—the time where we turn off our heaters in favor of our cooling systems. In fact, depending on which of our service areas you’re in, you likely are already using your AC. But, did you have it maintained before you started using it? Don’t worry—if your answer is “no,” it’s not too late!

Maintenance is a preventive service for your HVAC systems that help them last longer, perform better, and resist big emergency repair needs that could cost you an arm and a leg. Homeowners are sometimes resistant to such a service, feeling like it’s not “needed.” But when something goes wrong that could have been prevented, you’ll see just how valuable maintenance is.

For some homeowners, it helps to understand exactly what goes on during maintenance. Our professionals thoroughly clean the system for optimal performance, make adjustments to any loose components, and make recommendations for repairs. We do all this while carefully inspecting your air conditioner, and this is the important part! Read on to learn more about this step.

How to Choose an Expert HVAC Technician

Monday, November 18th, 2019

two-hvac-techs-standing-with-arms-crossedWhile other parts of the country are scheduling heating maintenance and starting to shut down their air conditioners for the season, we’re still using our cooling systems on a regular basis. That said, this is commonly the time of year that air conditioners begin to experience problems—the reason for this is because it’s been going since last spring.

If you have an older system or one that’s skipped maintenance this year, it can be even more prone to problems. If you do have an air conditioner problem, though, the last thing you want to do is reach out to just any HVAC professional. We recommend contacting an HVAC technician as soon as possible, but we don’t recommend rushing the process. Do your due diligence, and make sure your HVAC technician has the following qualities.

Tips for Improving AC Efficiency

Monday, October 21st, 2019

outdoor-ac-unitsIn other parts of the country, it probably seems pretty strange to be talking about air conditioners this time of the year, unless they’re talking about winterizing them. But winterizing just isn’t a thing here in the Gulf Breeze. Even though our fall and winter seasons are notably and relatively cooler than our summers, it doesn’t mean they are cool.

There’ve been years where homeowners in our area use their air conditioners all the way through December, only to start them back up again in February or March. That’s just the nature of being a Florida resident, right? But what doesn’t have to be a given is how much you’re paying to use that air conditioner.

There are quite a few things you can do to improve your air conditioner’s efficiency, all of which will save you money in the long run. Read on to learn more!

AC Care: Prep for the R-22 Phaseout

Monday, October 7th, 2019

refrigerant-line-outside-acFirst off, you might be wondering what R-22 is. It’s refrigerant—the substance needed for your central air conditioner or heat pump to function at all. Perhaps you have a basic understanding of how refrigerant works, and you might have even had someone tell you that refrigerant needs to be refilled (called recharged in the HVAC industry) every once in a while.

First off, that’s not true—if your system is losing refrigerant, it means there is a leak in the line that has to be repaired before it can be recharged. In the ideal scenario, your AC system has enough refrigerant upon installation to last throughout its entire lifespan.

That brings us back to R-22. If your system is a decade old or older, chances are that it uses this type of refrigerant. And unfortunately, R-22 is being phased out. The reason is due to the harmful effects it has on the environment, so it’s for a good cause! But you may be in for an unpleasant surprise should your older AC need refrigerant.

Don’t Let Ice Be the End of Your AC!

Monday, August 26th, 2019

ice-on-air-conditioner“Wait, isn’t ice development a normal part of air conditioning? After all, it is a cooling system right?”

Well, not quite. Actually, ice is not part of the cooling process at all! Unless you’re using an evaporative cooler—which is likely not the case here in Northwest Florida—then you’re using a refrigerant-based system to cool your home. To provide the cooling you feel in your living space, your air conditioner uses that chemical refrigerant to absorb heat from inside your home and transfer outdoors. This is why the condenser unit outside blows out heated air when your air conditioner is running.

Moving heat from one place to another using refrigerant, as we just described, does not use or create ice.

Why Refrigerant Loss Calls for AC Repair

Monday, August 12th, 2019

refrigerant-line-outside-acHas your handyman told you to refill the refrigerant on your air conditioner because it’s getting low?

Have you been looking online for ways to seal your refrigerant leak by yourself?

Well, aren’t we glad you found us! First off, your AC does not consume refrigerant, so if your system is low- there must be a leak somewhere. Not only that, but refrigerant leaks are a critical concern and should in no way be fixed by untrained hands.

If your system is low on refrigerant, our technicians can perform a refill—called a recharge, but this is only a band-aid on a deteriorating problem that could spell costly repairs for your AC in your future.

So, let’s start at step one. How can you tell that your AC is leaking refrigerant?

Beware These 4 Signs of AC Malfunctions

Monday, July 29th, 2019

outside-unit-of-an-air-conditionerThe reason we talk about repair needs and malfunctions so much this time of the year is because this is the time of year they’re most likely to occur! And AC repair is one of those services you need to schedule ASAP and not wait on. We see a lot of systems, unfortunately, that are near failure simply because homeowners waited too long to call for repairs.

The longer you wait, the more likelihood there is of a “domino effect” inside your air conditioner—that is, a malfunctioning or failing component impacting other components in your air conditioner. Taking care of your air conditioner is good for your comfort, your home, and your wallet!
